Memories ..
Well, I've foolishly been waiting to post something here till I had something wonderful and poignant to say about Duane but this will have to do instead. I suspect that my poignancy well has run a little dry..
One of my earliest and fondest memories of my life with Duane was one hot summer day in Dauphin when we were 14 or so that Duane says to me "You've got to come with me to see this guy I met. His name's Dale". And so I went with him to Dale's house which soon became our headquarters for music, art and books. Especially music. All of a sudden I was hearing this fantastic music which continued to form and define me for many years to come. It all seems rather blase' and silly in todays light but back then the unfurling influences of Pink Floyd, Supertramp and Yes could not be underestimated .. and since that time Duane was ALWAYS a mentor to me in so many fashions, of so many facets on the diamond that is my life. For especially that, I will always be grateful and aware of his lifelong influence on me.
And so I leave at least this; a snippet of the lyrics that we three young kings pondered so heavily over, and bemused so lightly..
Even in the quietest moments
I wish I knew what I had to do
And even though the sun is shining
Well I feel the rain --- here it comes again, dear
And even when you showed me
My heart was out of tune
For theres a shadow of doubt
thats not letting me find you too soon
The music that you gave me
The language of my soul
Oh lord, I want to be with you.
Wont you let me come in from the cold?
And even though the stars are listening
And the oceans deep, I just go to sleep
And then I create a silent movie
You become the star, is that what you are, dear?
Your whisper tells a secret
Your laughter brings me joy
And a wonder of feeling Im natures own little boy
But still the tears keep falling
Theyre raining from the sky
Well theres a lot of me got to go under before I get high
And even when the song is over
Where have I been --- was it just a dream?
And though your door is always open
Where do I begin --- may I please come in, dear?
