I remember going to his house on Kraim Avenue in Dauphin the first time and being directed to his room by his father. This was in the spring and it was still pretty cold out. It was just as cold in his room, I noticed, and I was instructed to close the door upon entering -- and it wasn't for privacy. His window was wide open - at first I thought he was simply a fresh air freak, but the answer was otherwise: Duane liked the cold. During the summer the house would be pretty much climate-controlled to a level of his satisfaction by virtue of central air, but during the rest of the year the heat would naturally kick in. Some people might have simply shut the vents to their room, which he did. But that wasn't enough for him, so then he'd open his window. I swear one wintry morning I came by to visit and there was a small snow-drift in the room! That was Duane for you - always cool.
